Book Online Ordering Ordering Store Student

Making The Best Of Student Materials

Jim Todd says he took into account in book online ordering ordering store student - "If anything can go wrong, it will" - when he projected a six-hour ordeal for the first day of Shorey's book online ordering ordering store student.

The movers showed up. But Murphy didn't. In less than three hours, Todd, the great-great-nephew of book emporium founder Samuel F. Shorey, guided his moving crew of about a dozen - Shorey's employees to new digs across the street in the south extension of the Pike Place Market.

The move was a snap, said Todd, 37, who's spent nearly his entire life around the 101-year-old family book business, the Northwest's largest antiquarian bookstore. It's his second move. The first was 15 years ago, when Shorey's moved to First and Union from 815 Third Ave.

Then, the family sold the property it owned. This time, says Todd, "basically our lease ran out." Shorey's expects to become the anchor tenant in the South Arcade Building, a larger space than the old digs. Yesterday's moving project involved moving all the books from Shorey's street-level operation.

Ol' Murphy has a few more chances to get in the way when Todd and a larger moving crew clear out its main collection of books from the 110 Union Building's second floor next week.

Todd, Shorey's online store manager, figures that part of the move, with Murphy's interference, could take at least nine days. Todd also hopes Shorey's, the oldest business of its kind in the city, won't leave behind any of its old customers. And because the west side of First Avenue generates more foot traffic than the east side, drop-in business may improve.

"I always plan on Murphy's Law," he said. "But Ol' Murphy must have slept in yesterday." After 91 years, University Book Store is about to break with tradition and open on Sundays. And the news has Puget Sound bibliophiles buzzing.

For the past several years, partly to reduce the last-minute frenzy of University of Washington students stocking up on textbooks and supplies, the U Book Store has opened on the Sunday just prior to the start of a new quarter --as it will this Sunday.

But this time it's not a one-shot deal. Customers can count on browsing the 100,000 titles that crowd the shelves 52 Sundays a year, says general manager Robert Cross.
